This is how I see it: Pocahontas is a Disney character based off of a true life historical figure. The meaning “Pocahontas” is irrelevant because truthfully there are so many theories as to how she revealed her name to be Pocahontas; some say it was out of protecting herself and that wasn’t even her name at all. Now, as a human being, she was thrown into adversity, forced to become “civilized” and some say was even a hero who saved at least a couple lives. So, being called “Pocahontas” can be interpreted as a compliment, because she was genuinely strong, courageous and worthy of becoming a Disney character. Right?
On the other hand, the irony around her captivity back when the English took over the West and called her a “civilized savage” and how she is now a household name in not just the USA, but the world is remarkable. Thank you Disney. Back to the politics (unfortunately), I don’t earnestly believe Trump says anything “seriously” because he just flies off the handle…it’s who he is and the American people voted him in with again, MORE theories as to how that all occurred. (Side note: rather than take issue with Trump though, it’s the overall mentality of America that should REALLY be discussed, please remember that folks). Beside the point.
President Trump probably didn’t really know the history of Pocahontas, so the term was an attempt at sarcasm and most likely the first thing that came to the table when some speech writer thought it’d be funny if he said it….well, it worked. AGAIN. To the chagrin of many. Genius? Perhaps. Who knows at this point. Focusing on strength, overcoming adversity, and how she made history, the term “Pocahontas” is nothing but reverential to me. In fact, it’s no different than being called ANYBODY in history. Taking offense starts with the receiver. PEOPLE NEED TO STOP TAKING OFFENSE AND INSTEAD BE PROUD OF WHO THEY ARE. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO REMOVE ANY PREJUDICE AND POWER FROM THE IDIOT WHO SAYS SUCH A TERM.
So who am I slamming? I blame the media for such idiocy. But can you blame them? Can you blame ANY business for gaining profit? Thereby paying their employees? Not really, it’s just that demand around what we read has sadly become centered around he said-she said arguments rather than ideas. Well, in any case, the name Pocahontas just became even MORE famous.
Using the name for political press however (Elizabeth Warren may be doing this too) is shameful, and disrespectful NOT because the term “Pocahontas” is derogatory, but because we’ve now become a culture that discusses what the media tells us to discuss. Consequently, political figures stand to gain from added press by association. THIS is shameful. What is truly important and what should be discussed is in one BIG word: the future. So science, space, literature, music, why an apple falls from a tree, you know? The cool things.
To those who feel uncomfortable because of Pocahontas being thrown around as a term, I’d say: shake it off. She was an awesome woman. Take it as a compliment. In school, bullies never really got to me (the two times they tried…so I was lucky in a sense), because I just wrote them off as immutable, pitiful people. I mistakenly even tried to help one (bully that is), but that’s a different story.
Power is all in the mind, not the word. If the mind interprets the word meaningfully, then that’s one step closer to truth and honesty. In any case, I would be very proud if I ever found out I was somehow related to such a strong-willed historical figure. Besides, who doesn’t enjoy the “Colors of the Wind?” Listen to that song POSITIVELY and enjoy the music. The press just enjoys causing a stir because, well it’s their JOB! Sad, but true. If you really want to change something, change THAT and GOOD LUCK!
Be strong, do your best, don’t let such inane words get to you. If people knew their worth instead of having to prove it all the time, the press would have nothing to go on anyways. So, the press is toxic. What’s new?
